Thumbs up What is a good head upgrade?

Well my head start making a funny arythmic rattle, maybe every 7-8 sec it rattles for a sec. I have change the cam-chain tensioner and the "diesel" sound got reduced, but this is still there. My mechanic said it might be a "loose" rocker arm, so I will pull the head pretty soon to see what's up.(Any idea what it might be?)

So while I'm on it, I would like to upgrade the spings/retainers.

Since I am a noob to the world of head upgrades, here a few guestions (flame suit on)

1.Is a spring called also a retainer or do we talk about 2 different parts? TODA does not list any retainers, only springs.
2.Does TODA means better in this case? I don't care if USDM or JDM, I want some good product for reasonable money. What about Supertech?
3. Should I upgrade the valves as well?

If you did already any of these upgrades, please share some light...I am in the total dark so far

Check the valve guides closely. The factory guides tend to wear out and get sloppy.
We don't want no sloppy valves at 9000 rpm.

Now to answer your questions since everyone else is having fun rolling on the floor laughing.

I have no clue what the noise is so your mechanic will have to dig deeper.

1. Springs are springs. Retainers are what keep the spring attached to the valve with the help of keepers that lock the retainer to the valve.

2. No need to get expensive and not necessarily better Toda springs. Honda makes great springs. The Honda intake springs (yellows) are a good choice for all the valves. Honda exhaust springs are a little weaker than the intakes. Supertech makes very good products including the retainers.

3. If you are boosted then going with the Supertech stainless steel valves is a good move. You must replace the valve guides at the same time.

Thank you guys, I had my super-stupid day yesterday...3 months not on the forum and one forgets EVERYTHING he ever knew about engines.

And I'm not sure if my wife will like the idea of a new girlfiend.

How do I benefit from upgraded springs/retainers if I keep the redline where it is and there are no cams better thamn OEM so far?
Or do we already have cams for boosted aplications out there?
