Default Well, finally tuned on e85 but......

Finally got her street tuned today on e85 and everything was going great at 24 psi of boost and the car was ripping great, probably around 630 whp. We decided to turn the boost up to 29 psi and get to 700+ whp and 3rd gear went snap on the street, didnt even get a chance to do any full pulls up there or put it on the dyno. I wasnt anything vilant or anything either. We did a 3rd gear pull which started at around 3500 rpm. As soon as we get to full boost of 29 psi at 5000 rpm, snap....3rd gear was gone but there were no parts clanking around or any other weird noises. We think 3rd gear just let loose on the shaft and is just free spinning. All the other gears work just fine except now when I go from 2nd to 4th gear, it grinds if I dont rev match or double clutch it. If you go to 3rd gear, it goes in just fine like there is a gear there but nothing. LOL One weird thing too, when 3rd gear went out, so did my speedo and then the EPS light came on. I guess 3rd gear also took out my VSS and if the VSS is working, neither is the EPS?

One solution I have thought about is to purchase a new 3rd gear and shaft and have everything shot peened and then put it all back together with new synchros and bearings, hopefully for around $400-$500. What do you guys think? Do you think shot peening everything will be a good way to go to maybe get a little stronger tranny that will last a little longer than just throwing in another good used tranny? If this will work, I dont mind spending $400-$500 a year if it will help the tranny last a full season at 700+ whp. I dont have the money nor do I want to spend $4000+ for the PPG stuff if I can figure out a decent solution for our trannies to hold up a little better than straight OEM form.

I dont want an AP2 tranny. They have lower gears if I remember correctly and the output shaft wont fit my current DSS 1000 hp drive shafts bolt pattern.

Turn the boost down.

That's your only solution to making the stock trans last.

You aren't going to get out of this for $4-500.

Also, the only difference in gearing between the Ap1 and Ap2 trans is 5th and 6th gear, and the reduction gearing. You can bolt your tail shaft onto an Ap2 trans as well if you wanted to keep Ap2 reduction gearing. Not that it's a solution that'll last though at your power levels.

It must be awesome to have a car like a Viper or a Z06, basically beat the shit out of it and not have to worry about the Drivetrain as much..........

And both those cars are ~$75-90k from the factory.

I'd bet if you tripled the HP out of those cars, you'd have driveline troubles too. Not many cars can hold up on stock parts when you more than triple the power output.

^ True

although I have been eying a few 04+ Vipers for sub 50k.............

I still like the fact of being the "underdog" in the S2000 . Nothing like walking away from a GTR
