Default Turbo question

Okay, i have never had a turbo charged car, but is it do-able(on a budget that can barely afford a greddy turbo+intercooler kit) to have a reliable turbo charged track car? maybe not 20lap races but just trackdays...seems like the heat buildup and constant boost would be too hard on the engine and turbo components...

any info would be awesome. thanks

I say yes, it is very possible but you will need to make cooling precautions.

However, has it been done? No not really.

Anything else is just speculation. However, just a few laps is no worse then a couple WOT runs so it shouldn't be a problem but as I said, its speculation.

On a budget as you say and you condition being only able to afford a greddy kit, I say no.

There are a number of gauges you would want to get to monitor your setup and some cooling mods (radiator and oil cooler) and a tune. This will probably put you $1000 - $1500 when its all done.

While I'm not planing to track my setup, I'm still projecting to spend about $1k more on top of the greddy kit before I get comfortable with my setup.

I did run the greddy turbo at summit point last year with no cooling modifications on a relatively warm day and the car overheated on the 4th of 5 20 minute sessions. It would have overheated much earlier but there was over an hour between each session where the car was cooling down.

You will definitely need to spend extra cash on proper cooling mods. I'm going to go thru this exercise myself before I go back to the track again later this year.

I have had no issue whatsoever doing extended spirited runs around country roads. That's WAY less stressful than what you do on a track during an HPDE.

so running at WOT in daily driving doesn't seem to be a problem?

do you plan on getting a greddy oil cooler and a new rad?

Right, there is no problem with going WOT every now and then on the street. Basically, you would have to be breaking every law in the book and putting innocent pedestrians and other drivers at risk for long stretches of time before you would run into cooling problems. If you drive like you have sense you will never have cooling problems on the street.

That being said, I have not yet experienced midsummer daily driving heat with the Greddy, since it was installed last Fall. I expect it to be just fine but the proof is in the pudding.

I really don't know what cooling mods I will do. I have not done my due diligence there yet, but other than the obvious ones like radiator and oil cooler I may also consider meth/water injection. Its all speculation at this point.

DD should never be a problem whether its in the dead of summer or the dead of winter.

As he said, if your overheating in DD your either breaking every law in the book or you have an engine problem.

Again, I ask if an aftermarket oil cooler will remedy the issues had with summer track driving and turbos
