Cracking cases is somewhat uncommon and needs a pretty severe shock to make it happen. Do you launch your car hard often?

I think most of the cracked tranny cases were coming from driveshafts that were not balanced after the install. Carey is the one person with the most personal experience on dogbox trannies in an s2k. He used to street his for a while and beat on his car quite a bit with a dogbox tranny. Maybe he can chime in on this.

Understood. I don't think the 4th gear pull was the sole cause of the crack. There must've been micro fractures from previous launches which will & can create side loads and contribute to the failure.

The PAR seems to be the cheaper option so far.

$5160 PAR Straight Cut gear syncro engagement
$800 OEM syncro set
Total - $5960

vs

$6000 V160 (new)
$3000 driveshaft + CC clutch
$1000 FB V160 adapter kit
Total - $10,000

Also for long term, use of the stock transmission will provide you with a wide selection of clutches at much lower prices.

check youtube. I'm sure they have some cars out there with dogbox trannies, just not many if any s2ks.

Is the CC dual clutch disc the only option for the V160 tranny? I wish there was a single disc version to drop the price a good $1k

Personally, if I was to go the v160 route I'd purchase new. I can't speak for others, but I'm somewhat concerned that the used tranny may have a latent defect that will appear in the near future. If I'm spending $3-4k for a used one, might as well fork over an extra $2k for the piece of mind. I dunno, maybe I'm paranoid.

Deep down inside, I want the V160. But maintenance costs (clutch) may be what deters me the most.
