Default Oil restrictor for GT3076R

Hi all

I have recently fitted a rebuilt GT3076R and mapped it with great results (will post later).

However I noticed that the car was smoking on start up yesterday. After removing the inlet housing I can see that the turbo is letting oil by the seals and seeping into the intercooler piping. It is probably going through the hot side too but haven't checked yet..

My current oil feed set up is:

OIL FEED - From straight piece from OEM oil pressure sensor location in block to T piece located next to driver headlight (RHD). Out of T piece through oil filter and into the turbo where there is a 1mm oil restrictor fitted on the turbo inlet.

OIL RETURN - Not ideal but out of turbo to a resonator tube (to collect and build pressure) and back into sump.

I really don't think that the turbo seals are shot and there is no play in it whatsoever. I get the feeling that there is too much turbo pressure in the turbo which is forcing it to seep past the seals. Either due to the oil feed, is 1mm OK? Or the return not being appropriate but from what I've seen, allot of people run sump returns.

Any help appreciated!

.035 should work for a gt30.

Maxworx offers a flange with a built in restrictor. Makes it nice and clean looking.

1mm is the appropriate restrictor for a 30r, is the tr30 center section any different I don't know too much about them? Hard to tell from the pictures but is it water cooled?

OK so the centre section of this turbo is from a TR30R rally turbo which has uprated barings and seals that can withstand much higher operating temps than a standard GT3076R. The benefits of this is is it doesn't require coolant cooling and is much lighter! This centre has been married up with 3076 wheels to create this hybrid.

I have managed to get in touch with the racing team I got it from and have been told it needs a 0.5 at most for our engines oil pressure..

I therefore welded up the 1mm hole and took it to a machine shop today. They VERY carefully drilled out a 0.5mm hole on their lathe with a big ass magnifying glass..

I was sceptical of 0.5mm making that much difference but I cleaned up both housings, refitted the reStictor and lines. After 10 miles of hard driving I removed the intake housing and no oil! :-)

So far so good.. Hope this has done the trick!

It is always a nightmare finding what size oil restrictor needed using ballbearing turbo.
Every car is different -- wrong restrictor or no restrictor at all will surely does some damage to the turbo.

this size is the "standard" bb turbo restrictor size. look up the vibrant oil restrictors just make sure you buy the correct thread pitch for a garrett chra
