NO how does that ridiculous theory still stand, reducing noise sure but back pressure is not a good thing and will not increase torque, in fact it will decrease it.
the best exhaust is NO EXHAUST
if taking your exhaust off yeilds power gain, then your exhaust is not efficient enough.
i once thought too big was bad, but its not. theres no such thing as too big.

If you put way to big of an exhaust on (lets say 4" on an NA S2000) when the header merges with the 4" exhaust the rapid expansion and slowing of the exhaust gas will cause a huge loss in velocity and in turn actually create back pressure. Of course open header is the best case scenario but that doesn't necessarily translate to bigger is better. On the other hand, for turbo application while it is still possible to have to big of an exhaust I don't know that I have ever seen someone with one I think mostly because you would have to go custom and it's expensive and hard to package but if someone had a Miata with a 13G and a 5" exhaust they would fall into that category.
The losses would be very minor but measurable and even if there were no power losses between lets say a 3" and 3.5" exhaust (at some point your going to be between sizes) the 3" is lighter.
I think I'm going to write an exhaust thread cause this stuff comes up way to much. For some reason it's my pet peeve.

Its also important to have smooth transitions when the size changes. If you just dump a 2.5 inch collector into a 3inch or 4inch or whatever pipe you will not have optimal performance. A nice transition will help a good bit.
I have seen power loss and an increase in lag when people use a 4inch dp on a turbo with a 2.75 or 3inch outlet with no transition.

My twin loop exhaust has shipped!
Lots more info coming SOON! Please be patient. I will update this as soon as I get all of the info.
