They are found in many different makes and models. T-bird and Cobras are just a few.

Sorry for my lack of knowledge of diff's but from what cars are this 8.8 rear ends? And what car year-model is the one to buy. Thanks.
I had the same question as well. I can only seem to find the 8.8 rear ends in a solid axle version. Is this the one you use, but modified, or are there actually specific models with the independent axles like the one in your setup?

The 03-04 Cobra's where the most famous IRS setups that used this rear.

When searching you need to look for 8.8 irs . Its 03-04 cobras that you will have the best chance of getting as they swap over to other rearends often

here's a quick list of easy to find 8.8 irs rear ends

t-bird supercoupes, most were open diff and iron cases 28 spline - these are $50-150 from what I have seen. Make sure you know what you are getting, lesser t-birds came with a 7.5" rear, which bolts up the same but parts are harder to get.
lincoln mark viii most were open diff but had an aluminum case 28spline, these I have seen from $100-400
99-02 cobra these had the trac-loc diff, aluminum case and 28 spline axles
03-04 cobra were aluminum case with track loc diff and 31 spline axles
The cobra rear ends are usually $1000 or more

Now for the good part.. all the parts are interchangeable.

the trac-loc diffs were basically the same for all vehicles. the sold rear diff requires that you add a bevel to the spider gear so the axle will come out. The cobra diff's used carbon clutch plates. The ford f150 has a stiffer spring for more lockup.

I assume they are using 31 spline axles in the kit.

the cheapest way out would be to buy a t-bird diff, get a used diff off ebay and the get a diff rebuild kit and final drive gear from ford racing.

What I would do is get a lincoln mkviii rear end instead of the t-bird rear.. the Aluminum 8.8 weighs about the same as the OE s2000 diff, where the iron diff from the t-bird is about 35 lbs heavier.

most 03-04 cobra rear ends run upwards of 1000bux last time I looked. If you start with one of the "lesser" diffs and rebuild it you can have brand new everything and still come out cheaper.

Does the diff hit the gas tank at all? Thats the problem i'm having w/my setup. I dont want to change the drive shaft, but with the diff that far back,it has to be mounted up high so the axles will clear the subframe and it hits the gas tank.

You blow your diff theres a good chance your not gonna move.. If you blow your axles your gonna need a tow. If blow one gear you still have 5 more

Everything clears without an issue. It took a little while for us to get it perfect, that is why we did not release the kit earlier. Our kit puts the pumpkin in the best spot possible on the s2k. This was achieved through trial and error.
