Default FI = blown motors

i was at Auto RnD in milpitas a few days ago and got a chance to speak with the owner (cool guy).

In our conversation, i asked him what he thought about a low boost FI system on an s2000 ie nothing over 10lbs of boost. Thats when i got a suprising response. He started laughing, i had an idea why, and he told me that every FI s2000 owner hes talked to, has blown their motor.

I asked , "All? "

he said , " ALL!"

I said , "okay..."

Being on this board for a few months, i got to read some threads on people running comptech and vortech SC's reliably all day long. So imagine how confused i was when an owner of a speed shop told me those kits would blow an s2000 motor.

So heres a question for you FI guys, Can I run an FI system( lets say 8lbs of boost) reliably or is the owner of this speed shop misinformed?

Most likely the guys who he "talks" to haven't done the proper tuning to successfully run FI on their cars. There are numerous people on the board who have had success in the long run without any problems.... at least no major problems. The key is proper engine management and conservative tuning. Without both, he has a valid argument.

Myself.. turbo at 9-10psi for 6 months now. Over 6000 miles driving with no problems. My success is attributed to very conservative timing... and it still feels good.

Perhaps you should have been the one laughing in his face.

Either he's misinformed or the only people he talks to are the owners of the S2000s that he's installed SCs or Turbos on.

Either way, I'd stay away from that shop.

He owns a "tuning shop". It's his business to deal with people with problems. Those who have nothing wrong with their blown cars won't likely patronize his business. There are hundreds, possibly thousands of F.I. S2000s in N. America. Do you really think that every one of them have busted motors? Mines over 2 years old and it's running better than ever. I guess I'm just living on borrowed time, huh?

Ask him HOW MANY he's talked to. Then laugh.

I agree that you need to be laughing in the owners face. Just whatever you do make sure you stay away from that shop cause it is pretty sad when the owner has no idea what he is talking about.

And how many of those has he personally had a hand in modding to F.I.?

ps. Anything 9 psi and over (S/C) is going to need additional mods and is NOT a simple bolt on. Any Turbo application is NOT a simple bolt on. Maybe this is the illusion under which he has been living?
