Thumbs up Engine Build - Stock Block-Sleeved-FRP Pistons....

So I have been talking with several people on the boards and can't seems to come to a consensus. Just in case I ever pop my motor I have been trying to get plans in place so that I can quickly get a new one back in the car without spending weeks or months trying to figure what I am going to replace with.

Option 1 - Spend $2,800 on a new 2.2 short block from Honda
This is my number one option b/c I will know that everything is perfect and I can just bolt on the head and call it a day.

Option 2 - Buy a used short block with good cylinders and have a machine shop refresh it.
Problem is I do not know any quality shops that can balance, hone, line hone..... Locally so I would have to send it to ??????? Anyone have a good machinist that can work on it.

Option 3 - Same as Option 2 but with Wossner FRP compliant low compressor pistons
I have still not seen anyone that has been running these long enough to tell if they will hold up and I know there is controversy about if they are really FRP compliant.

Option 4 - Same as Option 3 but with machined factory pistons to lower the compression.
Again I am waiting to see how this option holds up on Artisan7471's car

Option 5 - Have the block bored and sleeved, use new rods, pistons.......
I worry as I have heard many members have had issues with sleeved blocks

What about JE or Mahle? I know JE will custom coat pistons to be FRP compliant and Mahle has had good luck with the H22 pistons/H22 FRM sleeves.

Isn't Momentum trying to get Mahle to make some low-compression pistons specifically for the F20/22? The H22 pistons (-7cc dish-style) have the crown that is 1mm or so too tall for our engines, so it would have to be machined still..

I think you know where I stand on this one, lol. For less than $200 you can go low compression, however it's a but load of work to remove your pistons for mahcining.

As for machine work Scott go talk to K&M Machine in Raytown. They are probably the best machine in the KC area. Also you need to give me a ring so we can figure the Mase stuff out.

Scott,

We can do the CP Pistons with the custom coating for FRM sleeves too. Just have to make sure you have a machine shop hone it properly.

if you are building it to boost, go a ahead and sleeve the block. makes it way easier when you blow it up

Scot,

You should always re hone it, so the clearances are proper to the pistons whether the sleeves are in good shape or not.

You should run for office, or become a attourney

If I were to rebuild I would have the block honed, the mains line bored, the rotating assembly balanced, block decked........... all the normal stuff.

So, that being said would you recomend rods? I see alot of people buying them but I don't know that I have seen anyone break a rod with the small amount of power I will be shooting for.
