Default concerned about my supercharger

Sunday afternoon I drove home, only about a 10 minute drive. However, upon getting home and popping the hood, the pulley had come loose! The retaining bolt, washer and key were all gone, and the pulley had walked away from the supercharger bracket, held on only by the belt. The belt was frayed too. The supercharger pulley appeared to contact the engine's tensioner pulley, and marred the finish unfortunately. Not too badly, but enough to notice, and with the pulley being aluminum and the engine tensioner pulley made out of steel, the supercharger pulley got the worst of it.

Over the course of the next couple of days, I acquired the correct bolt (standard sized, 3/8-24 thread) and some washers and a piece of keystock and got it back together, with a new belt too of course. However, it still seemed to make noise.

I've since taken the supercharger assembly right off the car. I shot some video of it both on the car and off the car, but neglected to get one with the car running. With the car running, it does sound like this one though:

Here are videos of my supercharger:

One of the other local guys is in the middle of installing his kit, but has not yet mounted the blower. I had him bring his over, along with his good pulley. His stuff hasn't been run yet. He has a 1200, I have the 1220. On the workbench, just playing around with the compressor wheels and the shafts, they both seem similar with a slight clicking noise. His good pulley though seems to have much less play in it.

There seems to be an odd difference between the first video with the charger on the car and I'm spinning the compressor shaft by hand - no pulley on it - and later on the workbench. Any ideas?

I hope I'm just seeing monsters in the closet and that nothing is wrong with the charger internally.

I have a new pulley and fitting kit (bolt, washer, keystock) ordered from SOS already.

Hard to tell for sure with the vids, but it does sound like there is some extra play and friction sound in there. There will be some play when spinning back/forth, especially since you don't have the bolt on the pulley holding to shaft, but it seems like either some bit of bearing wear... or a brand new blower that isn't broke in yet? Like I said its hard to tell from here. But one thing for sure, there should be no up and down play on the shaft. This is what will tell you for sure if there is bearing wear.

Sorry to hear about this. Were you using the blue threadlocker stuff on the bolt?

Hi guys, thanks for the responses. I did use threadlocker, so I'm a bit at a loss to explain why it came loose. I am going to call Paxton tomorrow to see what kind of light they can shed and I will probably send it to them to inspect. Fingers crossed they can sort something out.

Meantime I don't want to waste away my summer top down time, so I think I will run the car NA but leave the water pump and heat exchanger in place, pull the fuse, hook the hoses together. Boo. I hope Paxton's turnaround is quick, it's just complicated due to me being in Canada and the charger needing to cross the border.

Oh yeah, there is no shaft play at all, and the wheel spins freely without any binding spots. But there is a rumbling, bearing like noise that rises and falls with revs. I also held up a straight edge to the pulley shaft and it appears straight, but the shaft is marred slightly from the pulley walking off of it, although the keyway looks perfect.

Same thing happened to my SOS kit on the way home from my tuning appointment 2 weeks ago. I started to hear this weird noise when I reved to 4k RPM's. I pulled over immediately & saw the bolt had come off the pulley. SOS sent me a new bolt & key way ASAP (thanks Chris) ...

I had used thread locker originally too, but did not tighten it while on the car with belt holding it in place. Also I noticed with the new key way it was a much tighter fit, no play in the pulley at all. With my original key way I could turn the pulley ever so slightly back and forth, Im sure that was the problem & it broke from the impact eventually.

All in all everything ended up being fine , supercharger sounds the same as when I originally installed it. Still makes good boost.

I think my belt may have gotten stretched a little more because of what happened though, not that worried though since I'm putting on a 13psi pulley & matching belt in a few weeks.
