While I do agree that you cant just blame the manufacturer and not look at the end user, Precision has a high failure rate with their smaller journal bearing turbos. Even qualified tuners have issues with them while using the correct oil restrictors. Their DBB units are solid though, its rare to see or read about one failing.
I have installed dozens of these turbos and have not seen any of these problems you speak of. I have one on my own car and I love it. From what I have seen the 5557 is a 30r eater and the 5857 is a 35r eater.

Just remember 3an feed line and no restrictor.
