Default air/air vs water/air intercoolers

im gonna lay it out in question format... and owners can chime in.

1. How/where is your waterpump mounted?
2. Does the heat exchanger have a fan?
3. Would there be a huge difference in IAT with fans vs no fan?
4. How big is your reservoir?
5. What would the average temp difference be with a FMIC>AWIC+fan>AWICnofan? in everyday driving?

thanks in advance..

this has been discussed alot hahaha

Air/Air is superior, except for maybe when your doing a drag because you can fill up the reservoir with ice water

i can tell you 12psi vs 11psi w/fmic the car is alot faster now.

I had an Ultimate racing FMIC and I lost 2psi with a 12psi pulley. The FMIC had lower intake air temps, but I like the aftercooler alot more. I do not have a fan but I was thinking of getting the SOS front mount heat exchanger.

one thing is that the pump randomly dies and then you have to find out why, which is a hassle because you have to take off the bumper to work on it/troubleshoot. aftercooler pumps randomly dying is a common thing as far as i have read. a lot of times the pump will die and you won't even know until you specifically check. i check my pump every week usually. a good thing is that although my pump has died about 4x, i have always brought it back from the dead. never had to buy a new one. i either had to clean corrosion off the relay, or shake it around a little (not sure why, but it works).

if you're running anything less than 9psi, the FMIC will lose about 50% of your boost. so the FMIC is really only efficient/practical if you're running 9psi and up
im not really sure where CT sugggests you mount the pump, thats why im asking.. and im going to run a OEM bosch cobra pump so i dont think those just die randomly.. i dont see how they would.

the reservoir i was talking about was a separate tank where you fill up your heatexchanger and store extra water. if you have the heat exchanger running directly from the IC to the HE then there really isnt anywhere to add fluid.

i was thinking of running it without a fan for a while, and later on adding one if the temps get too out of hand.

about the FMICvsAWIC being more/less efficient under 9psi i dont think thats accurate at all (or the 50%boost loss) theres maybe a 1-2psi pressure drop, but that doesnt mean you cant hit your target boost... there are several reasons (mainly simplicity) for goign fmic over awic but i kinda like the shorter piping route and the stealth aspect of it.. PLUS a turbo AWIC setup looks so much more badass than a silver FMIC chilling in your bumper

also, most of my driving is in the early morning (to work) and at night

on getting a better pump. i'm not sure but the CT one might be bosch as well. anyway i know a bunch of people upgrade to that pump. is it a different design or does it just flow more fluid per time? also i understand what you meant by a reservoir and i don't think it's necessary. i think the way CT sets it up has it cooling the coolant enough per cycle so that heat doesn't gradually accumulate to the point of the system no longer being effective. my reasoning for saying this is when i took a 2 hour drive during ~95 degree weather mostly around 100mph and in vtec with the AC still feeling cold to the touch afterward

My aftercooler is always warm to the touch. I have a full COMPTECH kit. MY AITs are usually around 100-110 cruising and climb to 130-140 when on it. I havnt beaten on it enough for a long period of time to even start talking about heat soak.

where does that compare to a fmic's IAT? 130's seem a little high, but i think with a big enough reservoir(1-2gal) the water can cool down and get less heat soaked.

how big are your lines? im going to be using -10an.

just a reminder, this is not for a CT kit, im building my own turbo kit but am opting for an A2WIC
