Default AEM EMS Connection Problems

Well It seems that everytime I try to connection to my EMS I have to go through hell and back again to get my laptop and the damn system connected. I have to restart 10 times, shut down a few more times, and turn the ignition on and off countless times until FINALLY the EMS will just randomly connect.

I don't have a serial port (no new laptops do anymore) but I use a Dynex USB adapter that is supposdly OK for the AEM system. Does AEM have an offical USB cable rather then a connecter? You would assume they would since (A) no one uses serial anymore and (B) they have an option for USB in their own software.

Any ideas?
