Default 1220SL supercharger oil

I have been searching the forums and reading for the past 2 hours now and gathered great info. So here is what i have found out so far:

- 1220SL - self lubricating
- uses "special" oil inside the blower (LINK TO OIL)
- change this oil every 7500 miles at max (earlier is better)

here is my question:

So the blower oil change is 4 oz correct?

It is sold in a 3 pack on the link, is one bottle 4 oz ?

AND importantly, can we just use engine oil instead of this special oil?

I am reading that the 1220sl can be a noisy blower (bearings, etc.) and can help but wonder if this special oil could be failure to properly lubricate this blower given the high temperature of the blower. So why not use 10w30 or your preferred engine oil? Also note that the 1200 blower lubricates from the engine oil.

- are the blower components different or is it just different that they added a reservoir within the 1220sl for a convenience factor

I used to have a 1220SL. From my conversations with Paxton Support, the SL internals are different versus an oil-fed unit. 4oz is about right. I have about 6 bottles left over, I think they are sold in 3 packs.

I'd also like to know what else you find on this.

Thanks,

Been trying to find out more about this set up as well. Looking at getting a comptech SC system but concerned about the negative things I'm reading about the self lubricating model. So far I'm not seeing a lot of people sticking up for the unit? Maybe using regular motor oil would in fact help?

I think the biggest issue with the SL is that it only uses 4oz of fluid, which never gets circulated. I think this isnt enough fluid to keep the SC lubricated optimally like a circulated engine fed unit will. The lubricant I would imagine is somewhat specially formulated to help with its design short comings, and most common engine oil may not be up to the task of the added heat and sheering I imagine is present with such a small amount of fluid. Just my educated guess.

It's probably better to call Paxton Support about using engine oil in the SL models. Why not just get the oil-fed unit? You do not have to tap the oil pan. It's not difficult to change the oil.

Yes, 4 oz's is correct

NO, you cannot use engine oil, in fact you can't convert a SL to EL. Paxton tried it with poor results and now does not offer that option.

All the SL's I have had and seen were not noisy unless they were failing, I don't think they even offer the SL in straight cut gears which are very noisy.

Sorry that I can't give you the type of fluid they use but I myself looked for the answer in the past to no avail. I just said screw it and bought their fluid.

That sucks, so if/when they go out of business sometime in the future, does that mean you guys have no oil to run your sc on anymore?

It's probably just automatic tranny fluid.
