A subwoofer is non directional so it doesn't need to be in the cabin for you to hear it or feel it as oppose to the mid and hi frequencies. Anyways the material enclosing the trunk is minimal to affect the sub itself.
I have my low-pass crossover set fairly low, so I don't really get any mid-range from the trunk, but on the occasional "perfect" low note I realize that I have it set a tad too high and the sub steals the stage from the six cockpit speakers.
Also, if you haven't gone through the trouble of dynamatting the car (I haven't) then you will get rattles and other miscellaneous noise derived from the vibration of the sub which pretty much makes it directional. (unless you have such a powerful system that even your front license plate is shaking)
In my case, I am REALLY happy with the result... with the exception of the soundstage being moved a little farther back than I like it. A small price to pay for a hidden system in a car with very little extra room.
