A properly designed sub enclosure for the s2000 should FIRE FORWARD, not up into the sky (aka trunklid)
Also a lot of factors you have to consider:
a) "Hits Hard" is subjective, I've sat in many many s2000's and none really hit hard, the owners just think so.....
b) Properly Dynamatted cars like mine can increase SPL by 3db which essentially is the same as doubling the amp power
c) A good amplifer is CRUCIAL since for convertibles you simply need more power
d) My setup sounds virtually the same top up or down...I removed the plastic tub piece and vented it so the sub always fires into the vehicle.
Check out my build threads if you curious how this can be achieved....

Quick and dirty, but wow... it sounds great. Running a 760w Sony amp bridged to the single JL 12" and I can hear and feel it on the freeway. It beat my expectations.

A subwoofer is non directional so it doesn't need to be in the cabin for you to hear it or feel it as oppose to the mid and hi frequencies. Anyways the material enclosing the trunk is minimal to affect the sub itself.
