xm ready?
I know the stock unit is xm-ready but what does that mean? can i cheaply install xm into it?
I do plan on changing the system eventually but at the moment money is a bit tight.

if money is tight, then i suggest not going XM radio..
i believe its just the head unit that is all you have, so you'll need the XM receiver/tuner which plugs into the back of your head unit, and the xm antenna. Then the appropriate XM monthly package and away you go.
costly ? yes
but well worth an investment if you do spend a lot of your time driving in your car.

the factory XM costs way more than the following:
aftermarket head unit
modifry DCI for dash controls
XMDirect for xm radio
you'll get way better sound with aftermarket. You spend $500 on the factory XM and your sound still sucks.

you could always buy something like the Terk commander (or similar xm unit) for around $125-150
Then youll need a PIE HON-AUX adapter (approx $80-100) which connect it to your OEM headunit - uses the cd changer port
So for $200-250 you can have xm directly connected.
I ran this setup for over a year with no probs and good sound quality.
