Why get high-end rear speakers when they just fire into the seatbacks???

LOL. This is why I used to enjoy selling stereos. Everybody has a different idea of a what great sounding stereo sounds like. No matter what you like, the S2k provides a great challenge.

Agreed - I spent $250 on new rears AND new fronts, and am thrilled with the sound. I was listening to Pavarotti on the freeway last weekend, and could hear every note, even in the quieter spots (if you want to challenge a car audio system try classical music!)

Polk EX402a's - I don't recall the front speaker model#. Granted, without a separate amp, I need to crank it up higher, but the better speakers handle it better than the stock.

If you just add rears then it will sound 100% better than stock.
If you then upgrade the door speakers and add an amp to the front speakers only, the rears probably help the overall sound by only 20%. JMHO.

I just bought my car last Wednesday (1 week and 2 days ago) and I've already put in a nice setup which has disappointed me. Granted, I traded a 2000 Civic with 2 12" JL subs and everything amped, so I'm used to good sound, but I have a Kenwood Excelon KDC-X969 head unit and the Kenwood 6.5 dual mags (that's $800 worth of stuff) in the S2K now and I don't think it's very good at all... I'm most likely going to be amping the speakers this weekend, hoping for a big improvement. Obviously at this point, I haven't done anything cheap and it doesn't sound too much better than stock... What's my conclusion? I bought the 9000rpm convertible to drive and it makes all the music I need to hear anyway! As far as the stereo goes, nobody will ever agree on what's best... Just have fun with it and decide for yourself what is best!

One of our local owners Marks2002 developed speaker pods that fit in the roll loops. They look great, have a very finished look and sound great. They fire into the headrest hole and are at ear level. It is like Mazda used to do with their headrest speakers on the RX7 and Miata's. Here's a link to the discussion. I don't know if he's selling them outside of the Sacramento community, but you can surely ask him.
