Default What do I need for a new head unit?

Hey guys I took a look at the faq on top and I didn't find the answer to my question.

I want to swap out my stock headunit for an alpine 9886. Is there anything else that I need to buy that doesn't come in the box?

I read the install is pretty easy:
1. Take out cover
2. Unscrew headunit
3. Take old one off brackets
4. Put new one on brackets
5. Wire it up

Is the wiring self explanatory? Is there any problem I might potentially run into doing this myself?

Thanks

I would suggest getting the Modifry DCI. It allows you to use your dash controls with a aftermarker radio.

You will want to get a wiring harness. This will allow you to install the radio without cutting your factory harness. After hooking up the wires, you can just plug in the new harness into the factory harness.

Install is very easy, if you do it right. if you have ever put in a radio before, the S is a breeze.

I'll add that Modifry can sell you an appropriate
harness as well as the DCI. He also makes a
plug&play harness for Alpine that means you
won't even have to splice the wires yourself.

Hmm well I ordered off of crutchfield, and they already send me a wiring harness. I've seen some people just tape the wires together, is this safe/effective? What is the recommended way to wire the headunit?

Whoever you saw "tape" the wires together is a hack. They should be properly soldered together and shrink wrapped. At the very least you should use crimp on style connectors.

I would buy the harness with the DCI if youare not confident in doing it right. That way it will be done right and you can install the HU in 10 minutes and have nothing to worry about.

I see, so no taping then!

I didn't want to spend another 90 and get the dci because I don't care that much about retaining the dash controls. I mean there's a remote anyway right? I guess I will try the crimping method then, thanks!

If you dont want the DCI that's fine but please at least use crimps. You'll never use the remote... your hand is 2 inches from the deck from the shifter

That is true.. but doesn't that mean your radio door would have to be open all the time?
