What is the definition of component speakers?
Hi all,
this might sound like a stupid question. But What defines a 'component'? I've seen a lot of people adding component to their stereo mod. Does my 2002 door speakers considered as a component since it's got the tweeters? and also if i would like to have some decent bass in my car, is component going to help 'a lot'? What is a component different from those 2-way or 3-way speakers? Any comments is appreciated.

generally, component speakers are regarded as those with a mid-range woofer and tweeter. 2-way or 3-way speakers are usually called co-axials. in terms of getting decent bass, upgrading speakers is ok but you probably want to get an amp to give them better power (i can't remember how much the stock head unit puts out).

component = multiple drivers, each mounted separately
coaxials = multiple drivers, single mounting package, all drivers with a common center line (center axis is the same)
biaxial = multiple drivers (2), single mounting package, separate axis for each driver (not mounted with common centers - tweeter off-set to the side)
triaxial = multiple drivers, (3), single mounting package, yada, yada, yada
In general components give better results, others are easier to mount and cost less. Components give you more mounting options, styles, etc. You can buy a 'brand A' tweeter because you like the mounting pod and a 'brand B' woofer because it has better bass. But you have to know what you're doing to match components, crossovers, amps, etc and not screw things up.
It's like buying a pre-packaged surround sound system vs buying each part separately. The first way is simple and you know it will all work together, the other way you get to customize the system to your own tastes.
