Thumbs up WEIRD, WEIRD Alpine Head Unit Issue

Ok guys...

My Alpine 9855 (highest end glide touch unit) bit the bullet. The motor on the face died, so effectively I can't use the CD player, unless I never want to change the CD again. Not a huge deal since I wanted a new one with the fast ipod interface. I had the unit hooked up to my S2000 with the Alpine KCE130B harness (the plug-and-play harness Alpine made for Europe which interfaces with the dash controls on the S2000).

So I go to my local Alpine retailer (wanted it fixed ASAP, so I didn't order off the net) and bought a new 9885, and figured it would be plug and play since this would be the third Alpine unit I've had in this car with this particular harness. I get it all plugged in and the unit just power cycles on and off. I did reset the unit with a pen like the manual suggested.

So I think to myself, no big deal its defective. Get another 9885, same problem. Checked all the wiring diagrams, and everything is the same between the old 9855 and the new 9885.

I think to myself, well maybe they changed something. So I go to the local Best Buy and grab an Alpine 9857. Plug it in, and what do you know, works perfect. No issues.

Since I really wanted Red illumination I went back to the first store and had them plug the 9885 in my possession into their demo wall. What do you know, it works fine. So I try once more to get it to work in my car, but it does the same thing. Turns on and off. The stereo place never has seen anything like this.

I call Alpine tech support, and they are dumbfounded.

Any idea what the problem is? I would really like the 9885, so if anyone knows of a quick fix for this let me know. In the meantime I'll keep the 9857 and ride Best Buy's 30 day return policy. Worst case at least I have the 9857 and it works perfectly.

9857 is better than the 9885 IMO.

I bet the Modifry DCI+harness will fix your issues.

Well this is a harness made by Alpine for Alpine head units in the S2000...

I definately don't want to rip it out.

Dude, what's your basis for such a generic statement? A comment like this gives him absolutely no value whatsoever. This isn't a 9885 vs. 9857 thread.

Keith, how are you connecting the Alpine harness to the car? Did you use a new aftermarket harness with it? More specifically, how did you connect the power and ground wires together?

The Alpine harness is 100% plug and play. One end goes into the Honda harness the other end into the Alpine HU. Thats it. Its made by Alpine specifically for the S2000.

Old school S2000 guys will know this. Before Modifry you either got this or got a PAC-SWIX which stunk. I wouldn't even have it if Modifry's DCI was around then.

Why do you think that would help his problem? I would think that, that has nothing to do with his issue.

I do remember reading about the Alpine euro harness which was supposed to keep the Alpine HU working with the dash controls.

I can imagine the frustration you're having trying to get this to work. Are you hesitant in getting the Modifry DCI for any reason?

I don't want to get the Modifry DCI because this is bought and paid for, and it does what I need it to do... I just for the life of me can't understand why if one head unit worked the other wouldnt.
