If you are dead set on keeping the stock HU, make sure the speakers can run effectively off that low wattage (they usually give you a range within which to run for getting the most out of the speakers).

My car is an '05 which I am led to believe has improved speakers over the '00 speakers. With my stock HU and stock speakers, I got distortion at mid volume levels with some music (mostly cello). When I replaced the stock speakers with Focals 165KPs, the stock HU continued to create distortion. Only after replacing the HU did the upgraded speakers function appropriately.
I think the stock HU is too underpowered to drive upgraded speakers without potentially damaging them. With the upgraded HU I installed, (Pioneer P8MP), with 27W RMS, the Focals were clean, but did not come anywhere near their potential. They are now being driven with 150W RMS and they are now performing the way they were designed to perform. I don't think one has to consider himself an audiophile to appreciate the effect that comes with components being matched to perform optimally. I don't want to sound pushy here, but if for no other reason than to protect your upgraded speakers, I would suggest that you consider a new HU.

Hey....Here are the pics...
Picture of overall width of stock speaker:
Picture of overall depth of speaker (KEY, because if too deep, will either break window or window will not go down all the way)
Picture of overall width of stock speaker basket.
Picture of overall depth of stock speaker basket. Back can be cut off for a slightly larger speaker....but not much larger.
I want to say that the maximum depth for mounting door speakers is like 1.79"....not 100% sure on this, though. Check MacGyver's website (I think there is a link in his signature). He has all the specs.
