It's always you guys that I end up asking, I guess it pays to know the experts...

I was going to keep my detector a bit lower so that few could see it and it wouldn't obstruct my vision. I was thinking dead center just above the wipers. Cops aim for your front license plate, so that seems like an ideal location. I was thinking i could run the wire through my defrost and directly into the detector. No cutting is cool. Is this a bad idea? Are there going to be heat issues? Can i melt the wire with my defrost? Is it better to hardwire your radar detector through the windshield pillar?

I've got an 8500 that haas already saved my a$$ on a few occaisions. But it might need to be "tuned."

well, detectors are like 'eyes' that look for radar sources... i was always told that the higher up they are, the more range you gain... even if a slight amount. and remember, whenever you position it, don't block it's 'view', especially if the 'blockage' might be metallic... this includes metallic based tints.

i know my CO has his installed on the secret compartment, and relies upon the chirps and the remote visual to let him know what he's got coming up... similar to Reedz install.

Yup.....the install was real easy....took about 15 minutes start to finish through the windshield frame.

1. Take of left Visor.....need a Torx 25 screwdriver. (time 30 seconds.)
2. Put topdown....(time 6.2 seconds)
3. Pull off pillar....(time 4.67 seconds)
4. Pull the windshield molding slightly down...(time 30 seconds)
5. Run power wire along pillar, through the windshield molding to where you want the radar to be.....down through the dash, by hte fusebox. (time, 4 minutes)

6. Connect the positive to Third accessory plug (option C....see above) with the second smallest female available(time 1.5 minutes)

7. Connect ground...extension with ratchet required....(time...2 minutes)

8. Mount radar. Check everything. (time, 4 seconds)
9. Put back all the moldings and screw/visor...(time, 2.5 minutes)

Looks great, radar has a clear view out the front and back, directly in line of sight, but not in the way of anything....

So you would not recommend wiring through the defrost?

Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeellllllllllllllll Nooooooooo....

You are doing 9 times the labor for absolutely no reason.

Plus, this way, the radar come on/off when its supposed to. It will not do that through the defrost without some good wiring. Itll take you a day just to figure out what the hell to do. Do it my way. Easy as pie, and looks great.

i think mine went faster... i didn't need no stinking Torx driver! bah!

i pulled my pillar, then checked right against the windshield along the top trim... there's a rubber gasket up in there... i just laid my phone wire flat to the windshield and pushed it up under the gasket... presto.

Phil, did you buy the aftermarket kit sold by escort? And did you mount the sensor somewhere in the car? I'm just wondering if there is any way I can avoid the additional charges of the aftermarket kit.

nope.... i had a spare black 9' phone cord that i cannibalized. you can probably find the same at the Shack or Wallyworld for $4. i then bought a fuse holder and fuse for another $2 or $3. the rest was all solder, an iron, and electrical tape i had around the house.
