As far as sound quality/quantity goes, which is a more effective upgrade, adding an amp or changing to better speakers? My head unit is a Kenwood KRC-807 (44W x 4 max power output), and the front speakers are still stock (2002 model).

The stock speakers are awful. Replace them. It won't be any louder, but it will sound better.
Amp and speakers would be the way to go though. You don't have to spend a lot of money to get a significant improvement.

go for the speakers power by an amp at least 25x2.

I've been told that an amp can't be added to the stock stereo without using a "high-low" thingie and doesn't give you clean sound because the stock unit does not have preouts. Upgraded speakers make a big difference in clarity. Go with speakers and a new (high output deck and that thingie that lets you use some of your own stock stereo redundant fingertip controls.

To be honest with you, I really don't know...I don't have an S2k yet, so I can't comment on S2k-specific conditions, I only know about car audio in general. I do know that some have put it behind the passenger seat, some above the gas tank, some in the spare tire, some in the tool well, and some just mounted it in the trunk in the open. It doesn't really matter too much, as long as the amp can breathe (has 1-2" above it, and isn't sealed somewhere; it will get some airflow), and you connect it properly with the correct wire gauge and a solid ground.

BTW, I glean most of my car audio knowledge off of www.caraudioforum.com....maybe ask around there for some tips. Good Luck
