Unique MagSafe Charger Mount Location

Unique MagSafe Charger Mount Location
In the interest of keeping my dash clean and unobstructed, I elected to mount a MagSafe charger in a unique location. Since I installed a Power Acoustik head unit, I don’t need to see my phone. But it also means I rely on my phone more than ever and need to keep it charged/powered.
The MagSafe charger was a lot tricker to mount than expected. It’s affixed using acrylic tape to a very thin wooden disc that you can’t see in the picture (nor if you look for it when in the car). The diameter of the disc is a bit smaller than the charger. I also painted it black.
The disc has a counter sunk machine screw going through it, then through the tunnel carpet, and finally through a large metal washer on the inside of the carpet. The ‘sandwich mount’ is secured by a small nut. The wire for the charger runs in between the center console cover and the carpet. It connects to an ignition switched USB power port that I installed under the dash.
The MagSafe charger stays put and I think it will continue to be quite resilient. At first, it was a little tricky to put the phone on the charger and remove it. But once I got used to it, I found that I really liked how it turned out. If I didn’t like it, the mod is fully reversible. The screw hole I put in the carpet is so small that it can’t be noticed when the screw is removed.

Dumb question, but uh....How well does the phone stay attached? I'm assuming it's magnetic? How well does it handle bumps, etc? This is very cool, and I'd imagine you wouldn't post it if your phone wasn't constantly sliding off. I use a QuadLock mount in the usual Modifry dash location, and I really like it over the universal "claw" options. It can't be seen with the phone attached, and is very secure. My buddy actually took it a step further and wired up the charging version in the same location.
Anyways, staying on topic, nice work, very clean and stealthy - I very much appreciate stuff like this.

In my prior AP1, I installed a Modifry dash bracket with a MagSafe charger. It’s was a really good, clean install. I was surprised at how well the phone stayed put given the bracket can bounce a bit. I wasn’t using the foam wedge.
Thus far, this location with a lower center of gravity has worked well. The phone has not fallen off since I installed it about a month or so ago. For me, the location worked out since I don’t brush it against with my leg. I think there will always be a risk that it will fall off given the right circumstances. That said, I am thrilled my dash is clutter free in my current AP2.
In my experience with MagSafe, I recommend Apple phone cases for the best magnetic adherence. If your phone does not have a good bond to begin with, then it’s not going to be a good location for a charger.
