Tool-well sub or side sub?
So I'm currently trying to decide which variety of sub box to go in my trunk. I would like to hear some comments from those who have had both, or from those who just went with one kind and why.
Is there a sound quality difference?
I'm assuming you need a shallow sub for the side mounted enclosure, do you need a shallow sub for the tool-well style enclosure?
Would this be a good sub....PIONEER PREMIER TS-SW1041D?
Thanks for any imput guys.

I went with a toolwell design. You aren't going to fit a JL W7 in there, but most "typical" depth subs should fit fine. In terms of deciding between the two, I think volume for sub can be comparable. The main consideration should be how you use the space in your trunk. If you ever want to carry golf clubs, which I do on occasion, then toolwell will work better. I also find the resulting flat floor actually makes hauling a lot of things easier.

you'll be able to use a far larger range of subs in a toolwell box than
a side box, both because a toolwell box can fit physically bigger subs
(though a side box does not require a shallow-mount), and because
it has a larger volume.
from darksidesubs.com:
V1 side box - 0.38 cubic feet
V2 side box - 0.58 cf
toolwell - 1.0 cf
However, if you plan on keeping (and using!) your spare, remember
that the wheel you replace with the spare will only fit into the trunk
by putting it into the toolwell.

i just made a side mount to hold 12" excile. sounds nice - 12" was very tight, is darkside making his boxes anymore? I was going to mold the box i made to be able to duplicate them, but dont know if there would be any interest for them.

I have the tool well sub box I got from ebay. great quality and makes it look nice and flush. I just got a subwoofer cover so don't have to worry about anything damaging the sub. great fit.

^^There you go.
Fiberglass or MDF?
Either way, pick up a 1cu ft enclosure with a Mag and you'll be set (mounting depth of 5.5"). Put 500W to that Mag, and you'll have the best sounding sub on the market. It gets loud if that's what you want or you can set it to blend perfectly with your midrange. Less distortion and smaller enclosure size than a JL W6, along with higher power handling capability and a $250 price tag (about half that of a W6).
I love the Mag I have in my S so much that I just installed 2 in my truck (which meant spending 3 days building a custom enclosure) with 2x as much power to each one as I have in the S.
