Thanks MacGyver and Barry. Looks like the PAC is the inexpensive way to go.

Hey!

It didn't take me months to figure out the "mute bug" !! I hooked up the KCE-865B in about 30 minutes... from the time I received it FedEX from Barry to when it was installed (I didn't note the mute bug until later that week when I actually drove at night!).

The "mute bug" was fixed within an hour... it was simple: once I figured out that the alpine head-unit wanted the opposite polarity signal than the 865B was offering during "mute mode"... I then added a simple relay to "offer" the opposite polarity signal to the head unit...

If it took me weeks or months... that would denote that I was a less than saavy technical entity.

Believe it or not: Barry received one of the last remaining KCE-865B adapters in Alpine stock. Immediately after hearing about this adapter, I ordered one. Since I purchased Barry's I figured I would keep my ordered one as an "extra"... but after 4 months of waiting I canceled the order. So... good luck getting one. Maybe Alpine can do a search of what UK audio dealers have one in their stock...

Shaner et al...

The "official" mute fix for 865B is a 10Kohm .25W resistor between the black cable and the thin purple cable on the white multi pin connector.

I assume you mean the black "ground" lead of the white harness and the purple wire wrapped in the black heat shrink... What will a resistor to ground do to a normally positive signal?

Additionally... I removed the "pass through" wiring and the white connector, so my "fix" was the easiest for me to figure out...

It would have been better that Alpine had actually TESTED the 865B in an ACTUAL S2000 before releasing it to make sure it worked...

...considering it was ONLY sold and intended for our car

I guess so... the way it was describe to me was that the black wire was at one corner of the white connector and the purple wire was on the same row as the black one and was thinner than other purple wires that may be present on the same connector.

Does it make sense?

shaner and luis, perhaps they tested it but never bothered turning on the headlights.

They were truly in the dark.

What a laugh!

Or maybe they are just trying to be good citizens by not letting you disturb the sleep of your fellow neighbours.
