Sub - Too Much Power?

Sub - Too Much Power?
So I finally ordered my system. Boston Pro's for the front and I picked up a JL stealthbox off of another member. I got a VGA500.4 to power everything. Soundstream verified that the Van Goghs are stable to 3 ohms bridged so I am fine in that respect. What worries me is the power. Looking at 500watts rms at 4ohms. 3ohms is over 600!
Now the Stealthbox is rated at 300 (10w3V2 at 3 ohm), but really the speaker can handle 500 according to some of their other charts. Is this doable with extremely low gains, or am I asking for trouble?? If I end up not liking the JL, I will probably put in a 10" Eclipse which should handle the power fine (4 ohms).
So first off, is running that much power to the sub dangerous, and if so, is it only to the speaker, or can it be detrimental to the amp as well? Thanks...
