Default Sub enclosure questions

Hi all,

Does anyone know if the shape of a sealed sub enclosure makes any difference or is it just the volume? I'm thinking some strange amorphous shape is probably the only way of getting the required volume enclosure necessary for a sub inside the cabin.

...and, following on from this...

How detrimental is it to have an enclosure smaller than the figures specified by the manufacturer - I'm thinking maybe just over a 1/2 to 2/3 of the advised volume?
I know you can spoof the sub with polyfill but there's obviously a limit.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Both size and shape will make a deference and have an effect on the sound output. However... that being said, the chances of you ever hearing the tone difference due to the box are pretty slim. Now making the box to big or to small can and will have an effect on the sound output. You can hear the difference with regards to the box being to small or to big. Your better off choosing the sub to fit the space your working with so it sounds good. Rather than just picking out a sub and hoping to make it fit.

Okay, so after further thought...

How about an 120rms sub powered with 300+rms with the gain turned right down. Would that work or will I just blow it?

Many thanks!

That is really the way to go honestly. Over-powering is FAR better than. underpowering. For the cabin think along the lines of shallow mount type subs. I'm working on building a passenger floor sub enclosure over the next few weeks. I'll be using a shallow mount sub. A similar set up to the one posted by shift in another thread.

Ah, good news!

I'm subscribed to that footwell thread. Have been watching closely - that Critical Mass sub is mental!

I'm torn between your glovebox idea but with an 8", or a 10" in the footwell. Concerns are...

Glovebox - what will fit, volume available, high chance of me f###ing it up and ruining it!

Footwell - how it will perform when covered with carpet and mat, no where near as as the other option!! ...I'll see what you come up with - shame my passenger side is the opposite!

Any thoughts?

Yeah that sub is truly amazing. I saw that at SEMA a few years ago and it was just total insane. They had there higher end subs in a box in a truck and it was so loud that the SEMA show governing body would only let them turn it on for 30sec at a time once and hour. I was all the way across the room... big ass room and you could here it. Truly nuts.

I can fit a an 8" or 10" sub in the top of the S.C., but I just can't have the stock cover intact. I'll have to delete it. That is an option though, I can do that and send it to you.

Good point about the footwell. I forgot your on the other side of the pond... to bad...

Do you think the depth & volume is there though, with that big lump of metal in the way that sits between the front & back pockets in the S/C - specially for a 10"?

You'll have to use a shallow mount to make it fit right...look right.
