Stereo remote adapter
I found out from asking a local installer that there are two remote interfaces for aftermarket stereos. The first is by TAC
which interfaces Eclipse, Alpine, Kenwood, and Pioneer and sells for about 59.99. I asked the sales rep and he said it was easy to install: even comes w/ directions. I'm going to pick it up tomarrow so I'll see if its all cracked upto be

It looks like it does exactly the same thing as the PAC SWI-3 unit which you can buy for about $39 plus shipping.
Be aware that where the instructions show a 2,700 ohm resistor, you probably have to use a 3,300 ohm resistor for the model year 2001 S2000.
I was very hesitant about going the ir route, but it turned out fine.
Also, this unit will not do your mute button. You need another relay to do that. I got the perfect one at radio shack for $2.50.

Radio Shack part number 275-233 relay is perfect for our mute button application, as far as I can tell.
It is a 12VDC Reed Relay SPST that has four contacts on the bottom and is normally open. "X" is a contact.
X coil input from dash mute button pin 14.
+
+
ground X ---------------------/ --------- X Alpine Stereo's "interrupt" line
+
+
X coil ground
plus signs show the coil. dash lines show the line carrying ground to the Alpine's "interrupt" wire in the Alpine harness (pink black). "/" indicates this dash line is switched by the coil but is normally open.
Sorry for the crudeness of my ascii based "schematic."
I tied together ground and coil ground. I attached the dash control to the coil input and the fourth lead to Alpine's interrupt.
The coil resistance is 1050 ohms, so you don't need to add a resistor.
Voltage 12VDC
Contact Rating 1 A at 125 VAC
Nominal current 11 mA
Size approx 2 cm. x 0.5 cm.
Cost $2.49
I used some Telephone Butt Connectors which are crimp connectors designed for 22-26 AWG wire to connect the three wires. Those put me out another $1.49. 64-3073A part number.
So for $4.00 in parts I got the mute back. It works great, better than stock since the Alpine's interrupt cuts the speakers and also pauses the CD.
The installation took 30 minutes. It works great.
By the way, I ordered a SWI-3 from HP Distributing for $38.41 plus $9 for 2 day air delivery. http://www.hpdistributinginc.com/
