Speakers are whining
Intermitent whine from speakers, coincides with volume on radio, not with engine rpm's. Should I pull the HU and check the ground? Can it be related to a bad battery? Help, Please!

Completely original, untouched 04. Even original battery, which still tests good. Only option is headrest speakers. Where is the ground for the radio, since that may be my first suspect.

The original headunit ground would be a good place to start. The headunit gives the signal to the speakers, the speakers are just drivers. There is definitely an issue with the headunit. If the ground is ok, perhaps you have a friend with a spare aftermarket HU to plug up briefly to see if the sound reoccurs.

CD works great, no squeals. Here's what I did this morning:
Removed the HU from the dash, did not disconnect any of the connections, but checked to see if they were tight. Wiggled them around, no change. Still have squeal in lower number radio stations. One station comes in clear, the others seem to be searching for a signal.
I just put a CD in the slot and the squeal goes away. When I switch over to radio, the squeal is gone until I hit a station change button and the squeal comes back.
What now?

Doesn't sound like a grounding issue; would happen no matter the source. In addition, the headunit
is grounded both through the harness as well as the case, though they may or may not be electrically
isolated from each other.
If it was a stray source of RF, it would only be on the radio, but would not be affected by hitting
buttons. Sounds like it's a failing headunit.
The marketplace forum frequently has headunits removed for aftermarket upgrades - make sure you get
the code with the headunit.
