Default Speakers and amp suggestion?

Hi!

I am finally ready to take the plunge and upgrade the stock audio system(if you can even call it that ahhaa).

I have a 2001 S2000, so I don't have tweeter cutouts nor do I intend to make cutouts. I am looking for a set of speakers(coaxial, don't want to make cutouts for components) paired with an appropriate amp. I don't want to spend more than $300, the cheaper the better! Not looking for anything great, just something good that will be an improvement over stock....

Also, ease of install is important too! Ideally, I can just take out stock speakers and put in the new ones without having to drill or cut or modify any brackets, or anything like that.

Thanks!

And sites where I could purchase from is awesome too!

You should definitely read the Electronics FAQ as they have recommended suggestions for different price points.

For 300 you could just change out the headunit. or change out speakers, or add tweeters and a combination of things.

I've so far changed out my headunit with a Pioneer DEH-P400UB for around $180 (head unit, wiring harness, no dash control harness) and ordered a new set of Infinity 6022i ($65 online) speakers to replace the door panels. I haven't installed the 6022i's yet, but changing out the head unit was pretty simple.

The next in line is to add an amplifier PDX 4.100 or PDX 4.150 and a woofer.

I just installed a set of Polk Momo MMC6500 component speakers in my MY2000. Same deal as you - no stock tweeters, and initially I just wanted to get coaxials for ease of installation. These Polks are pretty cheap. I got them from Crutchfield for ~$170 on special.

I was convinced to try the component speakers by the sales rep. These speakers are relatively easy to install. You don't have to cut the door panel itself to install the tweeters. You have the option of surface mounting, so I did that, putting them just in front of the locking/door opening levers. You just have to drill two holes through the door panel.

The woofers come with an adapter ring that is a perfect fit. I installed a cut-up foam baffle behind the woofer to hold out the water. It just looks like a big floppy thimble.

With a 100 Watt/channel amp these sound really good. For my listening tastes, they sound fine without a subwoofer.
