How much does a whole system cost? I have a head unit and an amp already
For starters, you could budget $300-400 for a decent/nice 4 channel amp for speakers and $300-600 for speakers, then $75-$150 for RCAs and additional wiring. Then $200-800 for the subwoofer, enclosure, and associated stuff, but use the amp you have if it's appropriate for the system or buy a new one for another $200-500. That would produce sound that is loud and clean--overall very good by most standards--but it wouldn't win any competitions or blow an audiophile away.
So a grand or two is my answer.
Or you could halve some of those cost numbers and take the minimums on others and get a lower end system, ie maybe a system with plenty of volume but poor equalization. Or you could double some of those numbers (or more) and get a very high end system with more volume than you can stand and clarity that stirs the soul. Personally, if I were doing that, I would want to put the nicer system in a different, non-tinny-uninsulated-ragtop car, as the finer points of such a system would be hard to enjoy in this car. YMMV.
