Power Inverters
I'm wanting to pickup a power inverter for the suv but I dont know how to determine what size to get. I know what I'll be powering so I was hoping someone(s) here could tell me how/what to add up in order to pickup the right inverter.
Also, does anyone know if the portable DVD player screens are large enough to play xbox360 on or is that just a waste of money?

I used the Black&Decker in my civic to power the my DELL Laptop. I don't know what you are going to power (XBOX?) but I guess every device has a power specification (my laptop ac adapter has 110 volts input and 1.5 amperes = ~165W of power it needs to power the laptop, so I bought 200W inverter for it), so see power spec of the devices you want to power and from that choose the right inverter. Also, their comes with 1,2 and probably 3 outlets in it.
I can only recommend Black&Decker, never had any issues with it, it has a internal fan and always helped me when need. Mine was 200W and only one outlet but there is 400W with 2 outlets on amazon.

Just looking to power an xbox360 and a display device of some sort. I have a 15" flat panel I could use, but dont think that would be very safe to travel with so I was thinking a small portable dvd player. I know some of them have inputs so I was hoping to connect the 360 out to the video player in. I have checked the power supply of the 360 to see what it takes but FREEK got me started on where to look and what to add.
Lets say for example I need 395w and the inverter produces 400w. Is that enough "buffer" or should I find one that produces say 10% more than I what I actually need?

395W is going to be the combined average, and given that power draw can jump from time to time, I would rather have the extra buffer.

I think you pretty safe even in that case, every device has a fuse and that power you need it is a max power, in case of laptop it is all fans + CD + LCD + HDD..... so I think it is fine, but if there is something on a market with a bit more (~450W), I would buy it, just to be sure

Yeah, but you really shouldn't ever run any power supply to it's upper limit. It might be stable there, but if you spike or anything you'll be constantly resetting it...and it's just not safe.

A 400W inverter for 395W draw is doable, but not really safe...

ive ran my ps2 and 17 lcd on a 400w no problem.
when i did the math, it was only 150 or so watts drawn because that the max they reccommend to be drawn from a cigarette socket before fuses start to pop.
now i run it off an 8 awg wire kit for full 400 watts.
look at your power cords and adapters to make sure the wattage is doable. im not sure how much a 360 pulls but i know lcds are usually less than 40 watts. laptop chargers are usually quite high though, 65 watts or so.
