Pioneer Avic-S1 install
ok, so i got the avic-s1 for free and thought i'd install it in the s2k (pioneer promotion with purchase of a avic-d2)
size is pretty nice as you can see, its not too big and pretty light to carry around
standard pioneer interface, whats nice is this unit has bluetooth, so you can connect it to your phone and make/receive calls from the touchscreen
it does 2d and 3d maps, 2d shown here
view from the driver's seat, its not too small, pretty viewable while driving
random shots
impressions:
i'm pretty happy with it so far, its fairly accurate with speed and distances (when it counts down in 100ft intervals for a turn, its almost dead on). reviews on the net say that the interface is slow and it has a problem with glare. i haven't used any other handheld units so i can't compare but i've installed the avic-d1, avic-d2, avic-n2 in friends/family cars and this thing is on par with those units in terms of interface speed. the POI is lacking though, the other avic units have way more POI than this thing, maybe with an upgraded sd card and some software manipulation i can add more. as for the glare issue, i havent driven with the top down with this yet (hardtop) so i can't comment on that yet. what does suck is that since its not integrated to the stereo, it doesnt mute the music when directions are read which i think most portable units are the same in this regard? guess i was spoiled by the avic and oem units i've used. another issue is when the unit is switched to night display, all the street names on the maps are hidden, only the street you're currently on is displayed at the bottom. as for the install, i used a ziptie to anchor the clip to the vent, holds well and i havent had an issue with spirited driving last night and this morning. there's just something about the windshield suction mount and the unit sitting next to an open window that doesn't sit well with me, hence its in the middle vent now. i dont have the guts to join the dash cutting club YET to install a double din unit
i'll update this thread in a month or so after i've put more time/mileage into this unit (i've only had this unit for 2 days). if anyone has any specific questions, feel free to ask.

That looks very clean, I'll have to look into something like that. I do alot of traveling so something small like that would be perfect. I use to have the d1 in my old car but no room now once I get the S next weekend.
