A Pillar Nav -- work in progress
So, this project got inspired by several things. First, the cup holder nav DIY I saw 1-2 years ago. Second, wanting to integrate my tomtom 1 into my late Audi A3 which is now a moot point. Third, my sheer brilliance... well, actually because I had these lying around.
So I thought, "I had these machined... cost me a pretty penny... might as well use it in something... but what?"
May 5
A pillar nav!
So out come the a pillar while I made a few measurements and some marks before putting it under the knife.
Once the hole was cut I put some epoxy in some strategic places and sat for 15 minutes to let it cure. Once the top cured, I added a stick to lock the position.
Then came the fiberglass. I coated the fiberglass mat on both sides and layed it on the pillar and shaped it as it cured.
May 6
Then came the test fit... The next day! I didn't realize it takes so long to get this stuff to cure.
So isntead of layering fiberglass resin, I decided to get some good ole body filler to get the shape. This stuff cures fast (15 mins and you can start sanding it)
Once she was filled in all the right places, next came the sanding. A word of advice, wear a mask and some sort of eye protection. I had a mask on hand but didn't have the goggles but after 5 minutes of wondering what glass particles would do to my eyes gave me enough reason to to pick some up.
May 7
So after some additional sanding... patching some holes... and some more sanding... I got it primered today!!! Isn't she beautiful?
So thats all folks... tomorrow I'm hoping to get it re-textured and painted black back to its OEM (or close) black.
So I thought, "I had these machined... cost me a pretty penny... might as well use it in something... but what?"
