Its almost a sold game, but if anyone can shed some light - i will appreciate it:
Head Unit - Stock ('03 if makes any different)
Amp: None
Final candidates for speakers:
Infinity Kappa 60.11CS - sensitivity 93dB
MB Quart QS216 - sensitivity 89dB

I would look into changing the H/U first. Without an amp and components you wont get crazy sound. I changed my H/U and added the slim Polk audio speakers and its better than stock for sure, but nothing crazy.
Without changing the H/U i dont think its worth changing the speakers.

Could this be a direct connect to our stock HU?

I love everything about the s2k, but the oem unit is well, not so great!

Absolutely get a new head unit before stand alone speakers. I was going your route and got a Sony MEX-GS810BH and it transformed the stock 09 speakers enough to make me hold off getting new ones. Plus all the goodies it comes with, streaming seamlessly with my Note 4 Android.
