FWIW, on Alpine's website
http://www.alpine-usa.com/US-en/products/s...?category=AV_HU
they describe the 9883, 9884, 9885, 9886 & 9887 as "steering wheel
remote ready" meaning they should work with a wired DCI.
the 9881 does NOT appear to be, but should work with an IR DCI

I just installed the 9884 in mine and it looks great. I was a little skeptical about getting aftermarket because of not being able to use the pilot controls but I realized that I never used them anyways. Plus, I can get the modifry down the road if I really wanted to. Just thought I would share!

I ordered the Alpine 9885 last week, it arrived yesterday and then I came across this thread ... just returned it for the 9886, love the way it looks (all blue). $50 more and it comes with the iPod control.

crutchfield officially changed the wired remote field on the 9886 to no.

i think they have the 9887 listed as no for wr as well but ppl use the modifry unit with those i believe.

when will we know if the dci's work with the new alpines or not?
I had these same questions prior to ordering my head unit. I saw that on the Modifry website only the odd numbered Hu's were listed, i.e. 9883, 9885,9887. i specifically asked him if the new even numbered models were compatible with his DCI and this was his answer:

Robert - Both of these models are compatible with the Wired or IR
DCI. I've added the model numbers to my web page too.

Bob

so order in peace and rest assured the Modifry DCI will work with the new Alpines.

i just installed the 9886 and noticed a high pitch noise in the background. at first i thought it was engine whine. but it's only there when using my classic ipod as the source. any ideas on what could be the cause? i'm going to try my friend's nano later to see if it's device specific.

My previous car(07 infiniti) did the same thing, it had to do with the charging system creating a ground loop, from what I understand its fairly common. Not sure if there is a solution for this or not though.

probably be going with the 9886 as i think 9887 is probably just overkill for my needs.

Sorry for the delay in answering, it seems like it's been covered already anyway.

I haven't ordered the Modifry DCI yet but intend to. If I could throw in my thoughts about the audio control on the new Alpines: I've noticed that I frequently bump the volume knob inward and enter the settings for audio (Subwoofer output, in particular) when I only mean to reach down and adjust the volume.

The biggest thing about the DCI for me will be the volume adjustment and muting because I use them often and reaching down with my right hand in messing up my flow within the car
