Need Stereo Recommendation: Budget=$500 to $1000
I would like to spend $500 to $1000, including installation, etc, to upgrade my stereo. Here is what I am looking for in the new system:
1. keep stock appearance (with S2000 stereo door panel closed)
2. satellite radio (sirius most likely)
3. keep dash controls functional
4. sounds good at 80mph with top down
5. a bit more base
6. available at Best Buy or Circuit City
My current thinking is to get an Apline deck and the Modifry DCI.
What I am curious about is what it takes to get a system that sounds good at 80mph with the top down? Will just a new head unit do it? Would I also need new speakers? Or would I need an amp as well? I'll have the system professionally installed (No way I am pulling my S apart hehe).
I would appreciate any suggestions! Thanks!

I'm new to the car and forum, only had my s2k about 2 weeks now. I hope to buys some S-Pods (link belowe) to hopefully be able to hear at 80mph. As for the rest, haven't done enough research yet.

Ok try this...
Best Buy:
Alpine CDA9851 $267
Satellite tuner and antenna $100
Alpine amp... not sure what they carry $300??
Circuit City
Polk DB6500 Components $189
Total $$856 plus install.
If you want to hear the stereo at 80mph you will need to amp it. I wouls also suggest that you look for a good car stereo place in your area and avoid a mass chain like BB or CC, that of course is my $.02.

Modifry's DCI changes the controls slightly to give you more functions, but it works flawlessly and is well worth the money.
Its going to be hard to fully meet all of your goals for under 1K. I installed a Pioneer DEHP80MP (from Crutchfield), Modifry's DCI, speaker wire from the local Radio Shack, and Infinity Reference components (6010CS) from the local Circuit City. That came to about $800 and was a huge improvement in sound quality. To get really better base you will also need a subwoofer (and enclosure) and likely an external amp. Adding Sat radio or an ipod interface will cost something too. You could compromise a bit on the HU, but not much and probably not at all on the speakers. If you have Circuit City install it all for you then you will have to budget in the installation as well.
I can hear my system at 80, but to get it to be really good you will either need to be able to turn it up louder (need an external amp for that) and risk your hearing, or you need to put speakers closer to your ears. SPODs would do that for you, but you may or may not like the sound. I have personally not heard them, but people on this forum seem divided as to whether the loss of imaging is an issue.
In any case, be sure to listen to speakers before you buy, listening to the kind of music you like. Be sure to try them both amped and just off of the HU if you are not going to get an amp.
