Default need some electrical help.

Well my main goal is to run a radar detector w/o the wire going through the middle to my cig lighter. I heard that I can cut the end off the adapter that plugs into the cig. lighter and connect the two wires so that the radar will turn on when I turn the key to on position. So I cut off the end off my adapter and found two colored wires, one red and one white. I am assuming the white is the ground wire. Where can I connect the red wire to under the driver side dash to achieve my goal? By the way I am using a Passport radar.

I did this in an older car of mine. All you need to do is find a position in your fuse box that is hot only when your car is on, ie radio, A/C, fan blower, etc. You can attach it a couple of ways. Any electronic parts store (radio Shack) sells these wire attaching sleeves that you soder the wire to then fit the sleeve over the fuse, and replace the fuse in the box and you have power. Or you can just fold the wire over the fuse end and shove the fuse back in. Find a good ground point (Typically a good one near the fuse box) and attach the ground. I checked the specs of my radar detector and found out how many amps it runs on, then soddered an in-line fuse in the hot wire (red) 1amp above the specs. Don't know if this was required, but it made me feel better Also remember that the fuse you attach the wire to will be a little tough to put back in since it will be a couple of mm larger no matter which technique you use. Good luck!

Main fusebox below driver's dash - connector D is hot with ignition ON. Use a standard 1/4" female blade connector to plug into the fusebox.
