Yes. If you put too much distortion into them. I have not done it before to my own system, but I saw it first hand.

the premise is that a badly distorted signal is worse for a speaker
than a higher-powered clean one. that said, even the most distorted
signal can't blow out a speaker without sufficient power, and I doubt
the stock headunit can produce enough power, even distorted, to kill
a speaker (though if you don't mind listening to painfully distorted
music, you're welcome to try).

Definitely switch out your headunit before upgrading your speakers. It makes a huge difference.

Aside from getting the S-Pods, though, the only thing really worth doing with the rears is to replace them with quality tweeters (just one on each side of the car). I remember someone on the board doing this not too long ago with good results and it's what I'm planning to do when I upgrade.

I upgraded my HU, speakers, and added an amp. I wired the headrest speakers to the HU and they do sound better, but for the most part I have the fading mostly to the front and the system sounds great.

Personally, I think if you amp a good HU and speakers, headrest speakers are unecessary. They may make a difference with the stock set up, but with decent power and a clean signal, I think headrest speakers are a bit much for such a small cabin.

What do you do with the OEM headrest speakers then? Do you just fade all the way to the front, or do you just leave them be (i.e. do the OEM speakers actually interfere with a quality sound system?)

Although I agree with the concept of CRAP IN, CRAP OUT, I also know that the front speakers do not sound as bad as the rears. Having said that, it seems reasonable that a rear speaker exchange may work well enough for some of us. Personally, I am not looking for the best sound system around. I merely want something that sounds proper without changing the head unit and having to add additional wiring so my remote controls still function.

So, is there a speaker replacement for the rear roll bar speakers?
