iPod adapter question....
Hey guys-
I am considering getting an mp3 player for the car. Is the Alpine adapter for the iPod also compatible with the HP iRiver? I like the iRiver over the iPod because of the digital voice recorder option (can use it for my job) and the interface with Windows Media Player.
Thanks
John

HP doesn't make the iRiver (unless something changed in the last week that I don't know about).
The Alpine iPod adapter will only work with the iPod (3rd generation and newer models). I'm not aware of any 3rd-party controller for the iRiver.
You can use an iPod with Windows Media Player by getting a 3rd-party piece of software called XPlay (www.mediafour.com).
I like the iRiver...but, the Alpine iPod adapter is pretty sweet...use it once and you'll probably be hooked. If you've gotta have the voice recorder you can get a nice one (<$50) from Griffin Technologies.

I also like the iRiver because not everyone and their mother has one. I talked to a guy at Circuit city, and he said all I need an Ai-Net to RCA adapter, then an RCA to iRiver adapter. Said it is pretty much the same thing as the KCA-420 adapter.....not sure if the song titles will show up, or if the HU will control the iRiver.

You can add the voice recorder to the iPod for ~$40 - http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/italk/

I use an Iriver iHP 140 40 Gig MP3 player with the PIE AUX RCA inputs for the sound and the iriver remote for navigation. This combination has good sound, is easy to use, and gives you all of the features like recording, longer battery life, and support for the open source Rockbox software.
I put the Iriver in the mesh pocket far enough under the dash that you can hardly see it from outside the car. I stash the remote under the passenger seat when I park and no one even knows its there.

I also absolutely HATE iTunes. That is my main motivation for not getting the iPod. I know there is 3rd party software available, but I really would not trust it with a $300 iPod.....too much $ to screw with.
