Default inexpensive 8" sub recommendation?

have a WLaurent sidebox
amp does 280w rms bridged, stable at 4ohm

Should I go:

RE Audio RE8, DVC 4ohm and run it at 8ohm?
http://www.woofersetc.com/index.cfm?fuseac...Product_ID=4903

Image Dynamic ID8, DVC 2ohm (wired to 4ohm)
http://www.woofersetc.com/index.cfm?fuseac...Product_ID=2643

CDT EF-8, SVC 4ohm
http://www.woofersetc.com/index.cfm?fuseac...product_id=3340

Diamond Audio D308D2, DVC 2ohm (wired to 4ohm)
http://www.woofersetc.com/index.cfm?fuseac...Product_ID=2837

these are all reputable brands. i dont need competition loudness... just somethign to fill in the low ends. also, thoughts on running the RE at 8ohm, rather than finding something that will work with 4ohm? will it get enough power for listening with top down?

Why would you run any of these at 8ohm? I am not a math whiz but won't that put twice the resistance as a 4ohm load, effectivly cutting your power in half? Also, if you wire a dual 4ohm voice coil speaker together you get a 2ohm load. Not 8.

If you are set on that amp and it is only 4ohm stable, get you a woofer that presents a 4ohm load. Dual 8ohm voice coils or single 4ohm. Personlay I think you will need a bit more to hear it well enough with the top down at speed.

There are better 8" subs out there but will require more power. That 280w amp will be working pretty hard to keep it loud enough with the top down. Then it may start shutting down on you from the heat.

a dual 4 can be wired to run at either 2 or 8ohm. (4ohm from 4ohm single or dual 2)

i wasnt sure how the lowered power would translate into adequate loudness for the s2000 setup.. but i guess i should stick with 4..

My understanding is that a dual 4ohm sub can present two separate 4ohm loads OR one 2ohm load to the amp but no single 8ohm load. Maybe one of the smarter guys like John can chime in here and correct me if I am wrong. I would really like to know definatly as well for my own curiosity.

Just backing up Jeff here... But you can wire a dual 4ohm sub 3 different ways:

Dual 4 ohm wired in Parallel gives you 2 ohm load
Dual 4 ohm wired in Series gives you 8 ohm load
Dual 4 ohm wired using seperate amps providing 4 ohm power to each coil

dk1999,

have you used the sub? looking at the freq response it drops off quickly below 50Hz. also, the sensitivity and spl ratings dont look that nice

do you have an opinion on Image Dynamics?

btw, I just rewired my Boston Pro60 components. They were getting 100W+ straight, but I rewired them to run bridge (now getting 300W+ because theyre 3ohm) and theyre about to shatter my eardrums!!! May have to put subwoofer purchase on the backburner@!

I have not heard that Focal in person, but I have heard others from them. However I do know this, Focal is known for producing amazingly good speakers. I have installed Focal speakers and they always sounded great. I've heard and installed and built boxes for the ID sub's... however you'll notice I don't sell them... there's a reason for that.

I would love to expand my shop to the point that I could carry Focal, but honestly I wouldn't even concern myself with ID. I just have never been impressed with the quality or the sound. They always reminded me of something you'd buy out of J.C. Whitney. Not my cup of tea... but that's just my taste and my ears, you may like them and there's nothing wrong with that. I just don't.
