Default Illiterate needs help

i just purchased an alpine hu 9857. I would like to boost up the bass and want to put a sub in the trunk. I do not however know what in the world to do. I have been reading up and i cant understand a darn thing when it comes to speakers. Should i build a fiberglass sub box or purchase one? i don't want to take up too much room so just 1 sub and 1 amp. How big should my sub be? What kind of sub and amp? I honestly am so lost. My price range is around $400-500 at the max.

Thanks in advance.

You do not need anything larger than a 10" sub, in fact an 8" would problably be fine. (Depending on the sub.)

It also depends greatly on how much space you are willing to lose.

Personally, I like this option:

It is a 10" sub and takes up VERY little space.

PM this guy:

As his website appears to be down.

Another option if you are looking for something to put in the toolwell is from here:

Darknight is a moderator of the electronics forum so he will chime in here soon to help clarify anything I mess up. but this is more of a "turn-key" approach since he sells the sub, box and amp together. The first one I listed, will require you to purchase an amp separatly. (Not a big deal, just something to be aware of.)

By fiberglass sub, you mean fiberglass sub BOX. A fiberglass box is lighter than the traditional wood one, but is more expensive. The weight difference is pretty small (fiberglass is about one third the weight of wood, but its only like a 10lb difference)

If you want the pretty painted look, you want fiberglass. However, if you just want bling, you dont need the entire box out of glass, just the top section.

The box and sub is about the same weight as the tire plus tools. Overall, you wont notice a weight difference.

Hi, I just went the conserative and added a 10" Orioin custom Box in the trunk. It fit perfectly in the hole in the turnk together with a 5 channel Alpine Amp. The amp also runs the factory speakers in the doors. I had purchased a pair of 6.5 Fosgates for the door but realized the the factory speaker / amp combination running with the correct Hertz sounded much better. Not sure if your HU has a built in crossover or Sub Woofer Controls, but this would be the best economical option way to go. Email me if you need further help ... picsbyrich@hotmail.com
