How much power should i give my sub?
Guys, i just bought an infinity kapper perfect 12DVQ.
It says that it has an RMS of 400W @ 2 ohms...
I was just wondering what strenght of amp i should get.
I saw a nice alpine MRP-M350 that has 350 W RMS at 2 ohm. I also saw one, MRP-M500 that has 500 W RMS.
I know that the alpine ratings are not always accurate, my friend has the 500W RMS one and he puts out 567W in reality. So should i go for the 350W rms one?
SHould i over power it? And if so by how much?
Or should i underpower it? And if so by how much?
Let me know please,
David

Alpine usually underrates their amps, and the bench tests are usually substantially higher than rated (Pikkashoe got the MRV-F545 that is RATED at 125wrms, but was bench tested at 179wrms......almost a 50% underrating). The 350 should be fine, and will probably put out closer to 400-425wrms on the bench.

i'd go even bigger.
Those infinity subs excel when overpowered. you can always turn down your gains. you are more likely to blow a sub by underpowering it rather than over powering it.

See, i heard the opposite. THey told me that underpowering (while not good for the sub) will damage it less than if you overpower it.
I really just want the sub to sound good.
Should i stick to the 350W rms or go higher?
I'm leaning towards the 350w rms myself as others have suggested but i'm worried that maye i should get a bigger amp.. however, the next one in the line is 500 rms which really means 560 or more...
Please help me make up my mind, i have to get an amp,
Dave

6000 jigawatts!!!
Like John said, the 350 is fine. Personally, Id get something bigger, so that you are not limited for the future, if you can spare the money, get the 500. It will sound good with 350 however.
The way I usually treat my amps...
Say you want to get a clean 300wrms...(forget under/over rating for a sec) If you get a 350 watt amp, and push 300wrms, you are pretty much working the amp to capacity. On the other hand, a 500watt amp pushing 300 is half a$$ing, so it will run cooler, and not stress out. Ive always done it this way, with great success. Never had an amp shut off on me in the summer, never overheats, nothing.
Like everyone said tho, a 350 is fine, I just think the 500 is a bit more versatile, and if you ever want to upgrade your sub, or put it in another car, you wont need a new amp, youll have enough juice to power whatever you need.

Dave does make a great point. If you can afford the bigger amp get it. But the 350 will do the job.
