Default Drop in speakers

I was wondering if anyone here is maintaining a list of speakers for the fronts (6.5 inch) that are just drop in without any modifications to the mount, not needing spacers or cutting to the basket. I suppose some that would mount with spacer and not need mod to the basket would be ok as well.

I would appreciate if anyone can list any that they know of if there is no such list. I`m trying to find a set of speakers to audition for replacement in my old AP1 because the stock ones just suck too much.

TIA

Did you upgrade your headunit yet? I just slapped in my pioneer DEH-P510UB last night and the sotck speakers sound SOOO much better just after that.

In addition, I am putting in Diamond S600s components and an Amp, and they should drop right in (from what I read). But you will need an external amp to power them right.

Mounting depth is 54mm, (2.1in), so any speaker with a mounting depth less than that will fit just fine.

(Diamond Hexes have a 2.2in mounting depth, but also have a plastic ring spacer that adds a few mm).

Yeah I have upgraded headunit. I have an Alpine IDA-X100 in right now, and with the old AP1 stock speakers, it still sounds horrible. I'm finally going to take the plunge and put in an amp and speakers/sub, but was looking for the best solutions. I am ordering spacers from PAS2KNUT anyhow, but would prefer drop-ins that would work well with the amp (Alpine PDX-5).

Thanks so far for the speakers listed!

My car came with the Infinity reference and they sounded OK from the HU.
I added an amp and they didn't hold up to well.
I tested out some Infinity Kappa 62.9(6.5 inch) coaxials and they sound great.(they are a direct fit too but you need to cut the back of the basket)
Even when I crank them out, no crackling.
The problem is that they are 2-ohms speakers.
For what I'm doing, I'm looking for 4-ohms speakers.

If you want components, these are great:

Your headunit probably isn't helping your cause, do some searching on here to see what people say about Alpine Headunits. I just put it my Pioneer and it THUMPS. Even with stock speakers.

if you insist on keeping the stock baskets, not too many speakers will drop in
because the magnet diameter is too big even if the depth is ok. In addition
to the mentioned Infinitys, I believe there are some Polks that will as well.
If you're willing to substitute spacers for the baskets, a vast majority of
6.5" speakers will fit with no problems. And yes, the '01 speakers are
horrible - you'll definitely get an improvement swapping them out for
almost anything. If you aren't adding an amp, look for something with a
high sensitivity rating, say 92dB or higher.

So I don't need the baskets if I'm getting the spacers? Is this correct? Or do I need the baskets but just need to dremel the back off them?

I am adding an amp - already have the Alpine PDX 5 sitting here. Small footprint amp and more than enough for I'm looking to do.

Are u getting components or coaxials ??
I recommend the Kappa 62.9 coaxials, can be had for $80 on ebay.
If you want components, follow the link I posted.
Both will fit the stock basket with the back dremeled off.
