Do i need a Head Unit?
Will a head unit even help if i'm boosting my boston z6's with a 300x2 at 4ohm amp? i'm pretty sure my amp will max out my speakers.
i like the way the stock head units works. and i don't want to spend a extra 400 dollars on a head unit that won't affect anything. and then buy a 85 dollars unit that lets me use my stock controls.
so will the head unit help any? i don't need xm or ipod and so on because they are just useless to me.

Yes, the new HU will cut down on the distortion tremendously. And who says you have to buy a $400 HU? There are some nice, simple units out there for under $200 that will make a world of difference.
To be honest, I never used the DCI to let me use stock controls and I don't miss it at all. I drive left handed and shift right handed, so taking my left hand off the wheel, putting the right one on the wheel, and changing stations and volume left handed is awkward to me.

I have incredibly large hands (former semi-pro BBall player) and I can reach my radio controls from the shifter knob. All without having to interrupt my steering. I realize it may be less convenient for others.
Other reasons to swap to a new HU are in-dash mp3 ability, XM/Sirius compatibility, better display, potential use of a good multi-disc changer, ipod compatibility, better AM/FM performance, better EQ performance, etc.
In fact, I've only changed the HU in my car and the performance gain was enough for me to put off installing my amp, and buying new speakers. At least now, I can enjoy music on the highway and with the top down.

Although I've been very happy with the results, I do believe an aftermarket HU would be an improvement. It's a question of priorities. Some day (after completing my ongoing sub project), I'll probably look into getting a "dead head". Besides stock appearance and stock dash interface, having the option of swapping for a deadhead later may be another reason to postpone the HU upgrade until after you've added an outboard amp.
Are your Z6s in the S2000 now? Just curious what you have that delivers 300X2 at 4 ohms. That thing must be huge! Is it actually a 75X4 in bridged mode? Do they handle the Z6s OK even though the rated impedance for the Z6s is 3 ohms?I'm running Z6s and have been very happy with them.

i thought you can set you amp at any ohms. if i can't i'll just exchange it out for something else. since it is still sealed inside it's box
