Distortion at higher volumes

Distortion at higher volumes
When driving with the top down, the sound coming from my speakers sounds a little garbled and distorted. I'm running some lower end Blaupunkts off of a Clarion ProAudio HU (18x4 watts RMS) with a 10" and amp (info. in my sig). Would I get better, clearer sound by putting newer, better speakers in there? Or would I have to change the HU? My satellite radio and CD changer are Clarion so I hope that's not it.
I was thinking of putting 6 1/2" Kickers in the door panels for stronger bass or maybe Infinity References (shallow mount) to get clearer highs at high volume (like 23 and above on the radio dial). Any thoughts? Thanks in advance for the help.

If I understand you correctly, you're only using the amp for the 10" sub, right?
I think what you need to do is add an external amplifier to power your speakers - I suspect you're pushing the internal amp in your headunit to the point it distorts.

I have the same head unit and Yes without an amp on those doors the radio itself will cause the distortion. I have noticed it on anything 24 and above.
