Components: Amp Required?
So I read the FAQ (a few times - very nice, BTW!) but I'm still not sure about this one.
I'm looking at the Infinity Reference 6010's. I'd like to run them off my Alpine 9857. How's that gonna work without an amp? I feel like it'll be a lot better than stock, just not the full potential power of the speakers. I called Crutchfield to order, and the sales guy said I *NEED* an amp with these. The only reason he gave was that it "just won't sound as good as you want."
What do you guys think? Is it worthwhile to put these components in without an amp?

components w/o enough power will sound distorted at high volume (which is pretty much required to hear them with the top down on the highway)
It WILL work without an amp, but you'll be left unsatisfied.

Yes you need an AMP....
The question is weather you'll be satisfied with the output of the AMP in the Alpine 9857 or not.
Most everyone would agree that you should upgrade the Head Unit....so why don't you start with that. If you are happy...great, you can always get an separate amp later.
If you do get an amp...I would suggest a 4 channel. it will give you the most flexability if you want to add a sub or other speakers later.

I just installed Polk DB 6501 100 watts RMS 300 watts MAX component speakers in my 01 S. I bought the 04+ tweeter grills from honda and cut the door panels for the tweeter in the stock location. it came out pretty good. As for the sound its alot better then what was in their before. I had Pioneer 2 way speakers in the door. its nice to have the highs near your ears. when i have some extra money i deff want to put an amp on these to get the full potential. But for now i deff recommend having components in a convertible.

I don't have those speakers, but at least according to the specs
those speakers shouldn't be too bad without an amp - according to
Crutchfield's website, they're pretty efficient at 92 db, are rated as
2-90 watts RMS, and are 4 ohm. Doesn't mean you might not
ultimately want an amp later, but they're about as good a match for
headunit power alone as you're going to find. Maybe the salesman
was thinking about the Kappa series, which really require an amp.

of course it will sound better, and louder, with an amp, but I think his
question is do these particular speakers REQUIRE an amp, and at least from
the specs the answer is no more so than any other speaker, and they should
work better than most other components without one. Personally I feel
that most people, once they get on the upgrading train, won't stop without
an amp, but there are numerous example of people here who've been
happy with headunit power alone, and there's nothing about THOSE speakers
that make them unsuitable for trying it.
