Car Audio Set Up Recommendations Needed
I just bought a 2001 Silver S2000! I'm picking it up this weekend from Orlando and driving it back to Atlanta. The weather is supposed to be great, so I can't wait to put the top down and start my first road trip with my S2000!
All excitement aside, I have a couple of questions concerning the S2's audio. From what I've heard for myself, and from other people, the 2001's stereo is pretty bad. Two 15W Alpine 6.5's? A little underpowered for such an amazing car, I think. I know forum regulars get asked this question all of time, so I'm sorry if it's beginning to get old, but can anyone recommend a good audio set up for the S2? I've done some research here and there, but I'm feeling swamped from all of the options.
I'd like to keep the dash quick controls functional, so I'm probably not going to change out the head unit (cost savings there too), but I'd like to boost the system's power and range, and for less than $1,000.
Right now I have a 200 Watt JBL amp that used to power a 10" Rockford Fosgate sub in my old car, but the box would take up 70% of my trunk space if I installed it that way. I'd like to keep the sub, but I'm not sure where to fit it. I'm definitely going to change out the original 6.5's, but from there I'm lost. I've heard a bit about a behind the seats speaker kit, but I don't know where to begin looking.
Any recommendations for a good, moderately priced system? I'm trying to get the most bang for my buck. Besides, there's always room to upgrade later.

aka0,
Out of curiosity, who did you buy from in Orlando?
I live in the Orlando area and bought mine in Connecticut 2 years ago, mainly because the Orlando dealers wanted 38-40. I assume pricing has settled down now?

I just did a stereo upgrade this past weekend (actually weeks in the making). I installed an Alpine 4x45 amplifier on the wall behind the passenger seat (you can still put the seat all the way back - but the amp does not cool very well. With the seat up one click it still leans all the way back and the amp breathes well). I bridged the rear channel output from the amplifier to drive an 8" sub mounted in a custom-form ported enclosure that I made. The enclosure is built from fiberglass and MDF and fits in the drivers side well of the trunk.
I have made 2 enclosures so far and could build more if there was a desire. I have only ported the enclosure for 2 different subs (Cerwin Vega, and Rockford 8" - single voice coil, 4 ohm) and both required slightly different porting.
It worked out really sweet and did not require removal of the tire tool kit or take up much of my trunk space
Let me know if you would be interested in one (I will post the pictures tonight or tomorrow).

I just upgraded my system for less than 1000 dollars.. a pair of Alpine R series components, Rockford fosgate "Power"550x 138x4, 1 12" Kicker VR comp , and a custom enclosure on the floor replacing the tool area in the trunk. I put the jack and tools in with the spare.
The Sub and amp are flush to the floor and the only space i lost was the sunken in part of the trunk. Sound great !!!!

I did a two speaker system with amp and HU for just under 1500. I got an XM ready Alpine HU, Boston Acoustics 65 Pro series speakers, and an alpine AMP. Dash controls work, and it sounds amazing, even the bass.
